Read for Meaning’s in-person book clubs for kids return

by Ella

Reading is fun but even more so when you do it with friends. Read for Meaning is excited to announce that their Saturday book clubs are back in person at Glenealy School in Midlevels.

Read for Meaning celebrates its Sweet Sixteen—and returns to in-person book clubs at Glenealy!

On May 28th, Read for Meaning held its sixteen birthday at Fini’s in Soho. After three years online, founder Mary Barker and her crew celebrated in person with pupils, past and present, and their families. The celebration marked an important milestone in its mission to promote a love of literature.

Established in 2007, Read for Meaning provides literature study for pupils ages 5 through 16. Using real fiction and non-fiction texts, its own curriculum and the small group format, Read for Meaning makes appreciation of books its Number One goal. Primary and secondary pupils alike are urged to slow down and become active readers, making the reading process more productive and enjoyable.

Read for Meaning’s curriculum covers the range of comprehension skills; vocabulary and idiomatic language acquisition in context; as well as geographical, historical and cultural knowledge. Group discussion builds confidence in offering and supporting insights and opinions. Using hard copies of books adds to the wonder and beauty of reading, while the small group format builds lasting friendships.

Read for Meaning’s Saturday open programme resumes in person at Glenealy School in Midlevels on August 26th. Book groups will be offered at various primary and secondary levels, from Sparking the Imagination for kindergarten/early primary pupils who can enjoy a good story but who haven’t yet mastered phonics or sight words… up to STEM and high school book clubs featuring classics. Please click here for the Glenealy Saturday Open Programme Term 1 Registration form, which outlines schedule, book club levels offered and instructions for enrolling.

Read for Meaning’s programmes at German Swiss International School at Peak and Pokfulam campuses start on September 19th and November 6th, respectively. Note that these book clubs are for GSIS pupils only. To register, please contact Ms. Conny Zavou, Operations and Programmes Manager, at afternoonactivities@gsis.edu.hk.
