The Harbour School wins prestigious international award for innovative marine science program
The Harbour School(THS) has won the coveted award of Best in Teaching and Learning at the 2022 International School Awards, an annual event organized by the international education research firm, ISC Research. THS is the only school in Hong Kong to win at this year’s awards.
The award-winning program is led by THS’s marine science team, including two resident marine biologists, the Black Dolphin ship’s captain and first mate. The Black Dolphin is a 50-foot sailboat used as an outdoor classroom. The THS Marine Science Center is a state-of-the-art wet laboratory with a touch tank and student research tanks, and is involved and used in a number of local projects such as monitoring marine biodiversity and coral restoration in Hong Kong waters working with organizations including Plastic Free Seas and Hong Kong University.
Dr Jadis Blurton, THS Head of School said, “We are honored and particularly proud of this win as not only does it affirm the hard work and innovation of our faculty, it is a perfect example of the collaborative and multidisciplinary teaching and learning that takes place at the school. THS is not a marine science school, but the marine science program holds a central place in its focus on experiential, place-based learning as a teaching and learning approach, serving as a model and resource for other programs throughout the school. In addition, the United Nations has declared this the decade of the ocean, and this is a call that THS takes seriously.”
THS students develop a greater appreciation and sense of responsibility for not only our oceans and marine creatures, but also for the fragile interdependencies of life on the planet. By taking real action, students not only understand the topics they are studying more deeply but also learn that they can, in fact, make a difference. Their experience of facing these complex tasks teaches them that the world’s problems are not insurmountable.
