Serruria Leung Ka-yan, who goes by her stage name Serrini, is an independent songwriter-singer based in Hong Kong. Beginning her singing career in 2012, her songs resonate greatly with her audience as they mostly relate to current affairs and romantic relationships among young people. Here, we talk to her about her music career and her goals for the future.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I perform by the name of “Serrini”. I enjoy songwriting a lot! I’m quite addicted to concert performances because nothing beats seeing my screaming fans in person. I wanted to be a poet when I was studying English literature in college. I’m not too far from where I started my creative journey — still a poet in some sense, but more entertaining perhaps.
What inspired you to pursue music as a career?
It wasn’t a career choice to start with. I just got busy doing all the promotion and production arrangements and I was forced to take music more seriously as a career. To fully be at ease and in control of my music projects, I became my own CEO.

What does a typical day look like for you?
I would say my day starts with aggressive social media scrolling in bed but it doesn’t sound glamorous enough. My day can also start with drinking 500ml of Evian as I wake. Then I’d wash my face and put on some clay or cream mask. I’d then vacuum the whole home and wipe some surfaces. A gentle home cleanse with mask on is a great use of time. Then I’ll begin the day’s work of songwriting/reading/writing, whatever serves.
Who is your role model and why?
I look up to strong woman figures a lot. I “look up” to, or nod to, good writers, actresses, comedians, or basically anyone who shows mastery of their art. As I grow older I look up more to myself because I’m pretty awesome. I’m constantly amazed by how resilient and fearless I can be. I’d like to keep that.

What are your goals for 2022?
I’d love to write some more good works. I may want to produce a mandarin EP with my dark condensed emotions. I’ve been having so much fun making Cantonese pop songs and I’d like to try something else. Writing for others is fun too but I enjoy writing for myself most. Maybe I can make an aggressive rap album too? But my general goal would be Inner Peace. I’d love to love myself more this year.

How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?
I’d drink more water and exercise more. I want more muscles! Recently I’ve acquired a newfound hobby of antique furniture. I bought a nice bench produced in 1902 China. I enjoy touching old wood objects a lot. I bought a mid-century American painting from some auction house too. I’ve always been quite happy reading books and writing songs, but lately, I began to slowly see the joy of owning nice, cultural objects.
