REN: Empowering Youth Through Meaningful Opportunities

by Ella

In a world where opportunities often feel out of reach for underprivileged youth, r é n stands as a beacon of hope. Founded in 2023 by Jo Soo Tang, r é n is on a mission to uplift disadvantaged young individuals by connecting them with meaningful employment and holistic support. The social enterprise operates on the belief that real change is a collective effort, working hand in hand with grassroots NGOs and partner businesses to provide long-term internships, mentorship, and essential skill-building opportunities.
Transformative Programs for Lasting Impact
At the heart of r é n’s initiatives are two flagship programmes designed to support youth, including those with special needs, disabilities and Down syndrome: the YES Programme and the R21 Youth Programme.

  • YES Programme: This initiative connects young individuals with internships, employment, mentors, and financial aid to support their daily needs, fostering both personal and professional growth.
  • R21 Youth Programme: Designed specifically for young adults with Down syndrome, this program takes a holistic approach by addressing physical, mental, and social aspects, equipping beneficiaries with essential skills to secure meaningful employment.

Through these programmes, r é n empowers youth with practical skills, confidence, and independence, paving the way for a more inclusive future.

Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
Despite its successes, r é n faces hurdles in expanding its network of partner businesses. The organization strives to place beneficiaries in internships across a variety of industries, but the limitations of its social enterprise network present a challenge. To overcome this, r é n relies on word of mouth and strategic introductions to ensure that the businesses it collaborates with align with its vision.

However, these challenges have not deterred r é n’s mission. One of the organization’s most inspiring success stories is Ann, a young woman with mild intellectual disability and autism. Ann struggled to find stable and fulfilling employment until she completed an internship through r é n’s partnership with The Coffee Academics. With on-the-job training from      r é n, she successfully secured a position at Shake Shack Hong Kong, where she now works proudly as a Store Assistant. Ann’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of r é n ’s initiatives.

A Vision for Sustainable Growth
r é n is committed to ensuring that its beneficiaries receive long-term, sustainable support rather than just short-term aid. Beyond internships, r é n integrates a variety of supportive elements, including sports and yoga classes for mental and physical well-being, as well as community engagement through public events. By equipping youth with skills and confidence, the organization lays the foundation for lifelong success.

Looking ahead, r é n aims to establish more partnerships with businesses that align with its mission, providing employment opportunities that cater to the unique strengths and aspirations of its beneficiaries. But r é n cannot achieve this vision alone—the support of the wider community is crucial. Attending r é n’s events and purchasing its lifestyle merchandise directly contribute to sustaining its programs and expanding its reach.

Join the Movement
r é n is more than a social enterprise —it is a movement dedicated to fostering a more inclusive society where underprivileged youth have the opportunities they deserve. By working together, individuals, businesses, and communities can play a role in creating meaningful career pathways for young people who need it most.

With determination and collective effort, r é n continues to break barriers, change lives, and empower the next generation—one opportunity at a time.
