A self-proclaimed life adventurer, Hiu Suet Tse founded Hiu Cha to bring joy to bring up a new tea culture in Hong Kong. We sit down with her and talk about her background as an actress and what inspired her to start her own tea business.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I am an actress, the founder of Hiu Cha and also a life adventurer. I’m someone who really cares about the meaning of life – the lifestyle, art of life and the adventures I take are the most important elements for me. No matter what happens, I want to live life to the fullest.
What inspired you to start your own tea business?
My family ran a tea business when I was younger, exposing me to the industry from the very beginning. My family business closed in 2015 because of the death of my aunt – this really crushed my family. As my aunt was the one who taught me all about tea and the culture behind it, I decided that running my own tea brand was something I wanted to do after my acting career.
In 2019, political issues and Covid-19 shut down my movie filming jobs. Taking this opportunity, I decided to start my tea business with my sister. I wanted to bring up a new tea culture experience in Hong Kong.
What is your favourite type of tea and why?
Firstly, Oolong Tea, especially Tieguanyin (Iron goddess) and Dahongpao Rock Tea. Tieguanyin offers an orchid aroma and has a very gentle and soft tone.
How do you balance your work and personal life?
When I’m relaxing, I love to light up a candle or sandalwood, play vinyl records and take a sip of tea or alcohol depending on my mood. I also do Chinese calligraphy, go out with friends, go to the gym, or practise yoga and boxing to release my stress.
How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?
The way I live and the way I keep learning is how I enjoy my life. I also really want Hiu Cha to be the part of joy to people who enjoy our products, starting with the packaging to the taste of our premium tea.
What are your business and personal goals for 2022?
– I hope the message from Hiu Cha can bring happiness to people.
– I want to collaborate with other brands and promote Hiu Cha to high-end restaurants and also the hotel industry.
– I hope my movie filming jobs can restart smoothly in 2022.
