Can you share your journey from Hong Kong to studying at Berklee College of Music? How have these experiences shaped your music?

Growing up in the diverse city of Hong Kong and transitioning to Berklee College of Music, I found similarities in the vibrant urban environment that both places offer. Berklee provided me with a platform to meet and collaborate with a diverse range of individuals, from producers to songwriters, jazz composers, and instrumentalists. Beyond formal education, the social interactions and immersive experiences at Berklee, including learning from my roommate, have been invaluable. This journey has not only been enriching but has also instilled in me a desire to bring back and share what I’ve learned with my community back home in Hong Kong.

As a multilingual artist, how do your diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds influence your songwriting and musical style?

Being fortunate to travel extensively and immerse myself in various cultures, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for different languages and histories. This curiosity fuels my songwriting, fostering a more open-minded approach and offering diverse perspectives. Understanding other countries and cultures enriches my music, adding unique flavors to my compositions. My passion for learning languages, particularly Spanish, since a young age has been a significant influence. French, Southeast Asian languages like Thai, Vietnamese, and Tagalog also contribute to my musical palette. Each encounter with a new language or culture sparks a desire to comprehend and connect with individuals on a personal level, enriching my creative process. This continuous learning journey allows me to share diverse cultural insights and experiences through my music.

You’ve worked with notable producers like Hit-Boy and James Fauntleroy. What were some key takeaways from these collaborations, and how did they impact your creative process?

Working with renowned producers such as Hit-Boy and James Fauntleroy at a young age of 17 was a transformative experience. Despite my novice understanding of music back then, the opportunity to collaborate with industry legends was a blessing. Witnessing their mastery inspired me to push beyond my comfort zone and explore new creative territories. The energy they exuded in the studio was infectious, prompting me to strive for excellence. Their innovative approaches and unique musical elements demonstrated to me what sets them apart as exceptional talents in the industry. Hit-Boy’s ability to infuse various elements into his hip-hop productions showcased his natural gift, while James Fauntleroy’s innate talent for songwriting was evident in the hits he penned. These collaborations have left a lasting impact on my songwriting and production process, serving as a constant reminder of the standards of excellence set by these industry giants.

Your recent works have showcased a mix of genres. Can you tell us about your latest album and what themes or messages you aimed to convey through it?

The upcoming album centers on themes of leadership, individuality, and giving back to the next generation. It emphasizes the importance of being a role model in today’s era and influencing the youth to set positive examples within their communities. Encouraging mutual learning and empowerment is crucial for societal advancement. As a musician, I consider it a privilege to express my unique perspective and thoughts through music and various art forms.

The decision to create a Y2K-themed R&B album was influenced by my upbringing surrounded by R&B music icons like Justin Bieber, Usher, Chris Brown, and Michael Jackson. Through this album, I aim to transport my audience back to my own childhood memories, offering a nostalgic journey reminiscent of experiences from two decades ago. By revisiting this musical era, I seek to provide listeners with a glimpse into the essence of Sonny Lucas and the influences that have shaped my musical identity.

What can fans expect from your upcoming concert at Soho House? Are there any special surprises or new material you plan to debut?

The concert at Soho House promises to be an intimate experience where I am thrilled to unveil several of my unreleased songs, allowing my fans to connect with the authentic Sonny Lucas. Performing live is a passion of mine, and with every show, I strive to deliver something fresh, surprising, and exceptional. Having honed my craft over six years, I am eagerly anticipating this performance, which I have meticulously curated from theme to concept.

Fans can look forward to a special surprise guest joining me on stage. I am excited to introduce a remarkably talented 17-year-old guitarist from Hong Kong named Dale. Despite playing the guitar for only a few years, Dale exudes passion and enthusiasm for her craft. Discovered through my guitarist friend Teddy in Hong Kong, Dale’s presence at the concert signifies breaking traditional gender norms in music. By showcasing a young, gifted female artist, I aim to inspire and empower the next generation, demonstrating that talent knows no age or gender boundaries. This decision reflects my commitment to providing opportunities and platforms for emerging artists while sending a powerful message about inclusivity and representation in the music industry. Dale’s presence is not just about her musical prowess but also about setting an example and inspiring others to pursue their dreams regardless of age or gender.
