The tradition is now given a creative spin at Lee Gardens – introduce the ‘Hawkers Run’, a race where groups of contenders join hands to pull their carts towards the finish and pick up street food along the way with tools to score points. There will be four types of cart for roasted chestnuts, fish balls & beef entrails, shark’s fins and egg waffles respectively, making a vibrant scene for selfies and snaps. Speeding through the course are active and veteran homegrown athletes, including badminton representatives Tse Ying Suet, Yeung Nga Ting and Yeung Pui Lam; ‘Long Jump Prince’ Theophilus Chan; rower Chiu Hin Chun and his senior and former Hong Kong representative Carmen Lee; Hong Kong Top Footballer 2023-24 Philip Chan; and Track & Field para medallist So Wa Wai, will also lock horns in the ‘Hawkers Run’. A fierce battle is expected to take New Year festivity up a notch. 

Visitors, on the other hand, are tapped to join the auspicious ‘Mandarin Porters Run’ (with the homophone for ‘good luck’ in Cantonese embedded). Participants who succeed in delivering a designated number of mandarin oranges to the finish without dropping any of them will each win a prize.

In addition to the centrepiece, the entire installation took her and her team about 300 manhours of meticulous work to complete all the weavings.
