This week we chatted to Anthea, who is a medical doctor and whisky enthusiast who has been at the public’s service in the midst of a pandemic. She shares with us her passions include poetry, reading and photography. She is taking a break from Medicine to explore new things and is looking to open a whisky bar on the side.
- Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
My name is Anthea, which means “flower” in Greek and is usually only spelt wrong when grabbing coffee. I am a medical doctor and whisky enthusiast born and raised in Hong Kong. I trained in Edinburgh Medical School and have just moved back to spend more time with my family.
- Could you tell us about your passion?
Aside from my undying devotion to Scotch whisky, my other passions include poetry, reading and photography. At the moment, I’m taking a break from Medicine to explore new things and am looking to open a whisky bar on the side. The vision is to be able to meet different people and share ideas and experiences over some beautiful drama.
- Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of?
I can’t come up with an isolated achievement, as I’ve never been a competitive person, unless we play Monopoly. I’d say I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been at the public’s service in the midst of a pandemic. As they say, “In a gentle way, you can shake the world.”, and I am honoured to have fought in the frontline.
- How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?
By accepting things I cannot change and redirecting my energy into what I can instead. I fill my days with people and passions that bring me joy and waste no time and energy on anything or anyone that makes me feel anything but worthy. The world is cruel enough, there is no need for a deliberate vertigo-inducing emotional rollercoaster.
- Is there any life advice you would like to share with our audience?
I would say, as cliché as it sounds, to just be yourself. People will judge regardless, but those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. It is imperative to be kind and respectful to everyone you meet on the way up, for they are the same people you’ll see on your downfall.
