Ritzy Chat: Miss Hong Kong of 2013, Actress & Co-Founder of Snow Queen, Grace Chan

by Ella

This week we chatted with Grace Chan, Miss Hong Kong of 2013, Actress & Co-Founder of Snow Queen. After fulfilling the duty of Miss Hong Kong, Grace started her acting career and acted in several popular TV series. Then she met her husband Kevin Cheng and had two lovely boys, Rafael and Yannick. This year she started her own beauty brand Snow Queen with well-known KOL Sharon Yung, which means she could have more time for her family. This week Grace shared with us her beauty routine, family life, and how to stay joyful.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?

Hey Ritzy readers! This is Grace Chan, most people in Hong Kong know me as a pageant winner, and an actress. But more importantly, I define myself as a mother to my two boys these days. I studied in Vancouver when I was young and only came back to Hong Kong in 2013 to join the Miss Hong Kong pageant. Subsequently, I went onto hosting and acting on television, and even had a chance to be a film once. Fast forward to 2019 was when I had my first son, Rafael, and then 2020, when I gave birth to my second son, Yannick. Life right now is a mixture of work and family, with the later taking a predominant role. Hopefully with the last two years of stagnancy because of Covid, we can return to normalcy slowly and surely.

How do you balance your work and family life?

Balancing work and life has never been as easy as just allocating a percentage and going about it. In fact, I think often then not, I find myself planning to do certain things only to find these plans changed or shifted because of sudden demands (ex. Kids getting fevers or getting hurt at school…etc). But I believe that’s the beauty of life —you can’t always have things your way and it’s important to accept that. I would never let anything come between me and my family, so even though I’ve always loved and appreciated my work, it has gradually shifted to a second priority in my life for the time being.

What is your daily beauty routine?

My daily beauty routine is quite simple. If I don’t have to go to work, I usually like to keep a fresh, barren face. No makeup is probably what you will see me in 99% of the time. That being said, wearing no makeup means I have to take extra special care of my skin. I usually like to cleanse my face with a scrub once a week, followed by washing my face with cold water (the cold water tightens pores). Next, since lately the temperature has been dry and cold, I like to use a face oil —simply a few drops—before I continue the rest of my skincare regime: toner, serum, cream. I learned from a makeup artist that you have to apply the oil before everything else for it to fully absorb and moisturise your skin. So far it’s working out pretty good for me!

How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?

I think being happy is about being content with where you are and who you are, which is harder to achieve than said be. I would say I have a pretty optimistic outlook in life, but I also am prone to stress, pressure, sadness, and other emotions too. After all, I am only human. I wish though that through my behavior I can set a good example to my children. The most important thing to me right now is to allow my kids to feel and be happy and joyous. I want them to have an untroubled childhood just like I did, and I know my husband also thinks the same way.

What does your typical day look like?

My typical day is usually quite packed as I like to fully utilise my time. I usually wake up around 7:30 am to bring my son to school. Afterwards, I make myself a coffee and after reading some emails, I will bring my younger son to the library, on a grocery run, or to the park. He usually goes down for a nap then, which is when I sneak out for work. Sometimes it’ll be a photoshoot, other times it might be a hosting gig or a video shoot. I usually try to be home before 4:30 because that’s when my older son comes home from school. We play for a bit together and then I start to prepare dinner for the family. At night when the boys are asleep, I start to go over work emails, messages, and on most nights, spend some quality time with my husband. Late at night, I usually read a book before I sleep as I heard you have to turn off all electronics an hour before bed to really feel restful.

Could you share the most memorable moment of you and your family🥰?

I think thus far the most memorable moment for us is when my second son was born and my older son and my husband were at the hospital waiting to see me and him come back to the room after delivery. There’s a very special connection that happens when you give birth (I’m sure many mothers would agree) but that moment of seeing your entire family come together, embracing and supporting you at this moment in time —that’s truly indescribable.
