Born and bred in Hong Kong, Janice Kau is an accomplished emcee and the founder of La Voix, which provides voice-related talents and training services. She talks to us about how she started her MC career and what inspired her to eventually become a speaking coach.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I began my DJ career in 2012 while studying Journalism at university. Then I worked at the radio station, where I started as an MC for various types of events. After four years at the radio station, I started my full-time MC career in 2016 and eventually founded La Voix in 2020.
Can you tell us a bit about La Voix and what it offers?
Backed by years of experience in the events and marketing industry, at La Voix, we understand the importance of choosing an appropriate talent to represent your brand at every occasion.
Possessing a dedicated team of professional talents with different specialities, we are confident in providing you with the appropriate talent for your upcoming campaign.
La Voix means “voice” in French. We specialise in voice-related talents and training services, including emcee, host and voice-over talents; as well as training in public speaking and emcee skills.
What inspired you to become an emcee?
I enjoy being on stage, facilitating an event, and when it runs smoothly, I feel super satisfied. This job also makes good use of my talents and skills – my fast response to ad hoc issues, language ability and presentation skills.
What inspired you to become a speaking coach?
As a Hongkonger, I think speaking accurate Cantonese is very important, especially as a message deliverer or as someone who has the power to influence the public. Most Hong Kong people have pronunciation problems when speaking Cantonese. No matter what industry you are working in, good speaking skills are essential, which is why I want to help my students improve their speaking and presentation skills.
What is your favourite memory while running your business?
Definitely the compliments from our clients. We hope that the public sees MC as a professional role, so when we or our students receive compliments from clients, I believe I am doing the right thing.
How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?
I think self-love is very important, not just saying “I love myself”, but practically setting up some resolutions for myself, to make myself better. In the last few months, I attended a life coaching course, where I learned how to face my weakness, how to tackle them and how to face my negative emotions. It doesn’t need to be a big goal for yourself, every little step counts, like drinking three litres of water per day – this can also be your resolution.
Another point is to be kind and spread love to the world. The same as self-love, it doesn’t need to be a huge action. Start by being kind to people around you with your words and actions to make our world a better one.
