Ritzy Chat: Joyce Cheng, Singer and Actress

Ritzy Chat Joyce Cheng

Joyce Cheng needs no introduction. Making her debut in the entertainment industry as a child, she has gained popularity throughout the years and has become a well-known singer and actress in Hong Kong. We talk to her about her music career and how she stays true to herself through the fame.

What has the past year been like for you, career-wise?

My company really trusts me to develop and focus on creating more music, which is great because I really want to step into the identity of a singer once again. In the past few years, I released one song a year and spent time doing other things in the entertainment industry. For example, I would fly to other places to film for months on end, or spend half a year making a TV show. This meant less time for music, and I felt like I disappeared from the music industry altogether. So, in late 2021 and early 2022, I dedicated my time to music and released five songs plus an album, and I think this really restored my fans’ faith in my musical abilities.

Can you explain your current musical direction to us?

I think historically I have two main sounds – one is a gentle, slow ballad, and the other is a stronger, more powerful and confident sound. Now I’m trying to explore an in-between.

Can you tell us about your fitness regime?

I usually take dance classes two to three times a week, each class is one and a half hours. I also do Muay Thai and hire a personal trainer to keep me on track. I’m currently on the keto diet too. But of course, this is what works for me – and everyone is different, so make sure you talk to a professional before you start an exercise regime.

How do you stay true to yourself and your values?

It’s hard to be myself sometimes, especially under the scrutiny of the spotlight, but I think it’s worth it. I hope everyone is able to be themselves — including the person who is reading this interview. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to be a jerk and disregard the feelings of others. Just stay true to yourself and try and be a positive person.

What do you have to say to your fans?

I’m very grateful for them — they’ve been here and never questioned me. Even when I go to film advertisements, TV shows or movies, straying from my main focus of music, they’ve stayed by my side and supported me. For this I am super grateful.
