A qualified solicitor in both Hong Kong and Queensland, Australia, Amy Kwan founded her own company Good Wills with the goal to change people’s perception about will-writing. She tells us about her background and how slowly but surely, Hong Kong’s attitude towards wills is changing.
Can you tell us more about yourself and your background?
I am a Hong Kong and Australia (Queensland) solicitor. In 2018, I founded Good Wills, a Will writing company. It is my very first time being my own boss. Before that, I worked in the legal industry for 10 years, mainly in areas including Wills & Estate (from drafting of wills to estate administration as well as estate dispute) and corporate law (specialising in initial public offering and compliance for listed companies).
What inspired you to start Good Wills?
Having practised estate laws in Queensland, Australia, previously made me realise that Hong Kong is very far behind in the Wills and Estate Planning area, due to cultural taboos. Knowing that a will is actually something that everyone needs from my past legal and personal experience, I was determined to educate the community in Hong Kong. Positive feedback and encouragement from my clients are my sources of inspiration to do even better and provide better services.
Is there an achievement or contribution that you are most proud of?
Every successful referral of my will writing service by my clients to their family and friends is an achievement that I’m most proud of, as they have not only planned ahead for their loved ones, but they have also changed their mindset and understanding towards the importance of wills.
This strongly ties with the mission and vision for Good Wills, and I’m definitely very proud and thrilled to see the market responding effectively to the work that I’m putting in. In addition, I’m also proud of the recognition of the contribution that Good Wills has made in the will-writing industry, with numerous online media, TV and newspaper interviews and awards being presented to Good Wills.
Are there any business or personal goals you are planning to reach?
Covid-19 has given us challenges but at the same time, provided us with some insights and opportunities to provide better service to our clients. The only constant in this world is change and we have to adapt efficiently for long term business success.
We have invested in several projects in e-communication and automation of our services, in order to reach out to the bigger audience, and we are proud to be one of the pioneers in Hong Kong to launch the online will writing platform service, InstaWill, in October 2021.
This is an automated process and by answering just a few simple questions, a will can be generated and reviewed by our professional will writers, before sending the finalised version back to the clients for confirmation. This is definitely a one-of-a-kind online will writing service in Hong Kong, with the hope of making will writing down-to-earth and easily accessible for everyone, even during hard times like this.
How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?
We tend to be so immersed in our daily life and routine activities that we don’t realise that we only have about 36,000 plus days in our lives, even if we live up to 100 years old. Realising that, it’s not hard to make the most of our daily lives and live in the present without overthinking what’s coming before us. At the same time, don’t let anything in the past hold us back to live a better life in the future. I also enjoy doing hikes around Hong Kong and being as close to nature as much as I can, especially the beach. A sunny day at the beach always charges me up and brings me a lot of positivity and happiness.
