Ritzy Chat: Glen Heyburgh, Founder of Centre Minds

by Ella

Glen Heyburgh is a seasoned mental health counsellor and the founder of Centre Minds. After a bad life event, he decided he needed to find a job he enjoyed. He pursued psychology and now spends his days helping people to be the best and most authentic version of themselves. Here, he talks to Ritzy about his background, his current business and what he hopes to achieve going forward.

Could you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I’m originally from Cape Town, South Africa and have lived in Hong Kong for eight years. Initially, I studied business management and my original profession was in marketing, but I don’t ever recall enjoying my work. It took something bad to happen in my life for me to transition to a career in psychology. Strangely, I am grateful for that bad thing. Had it not happened, I may still be miserable and in a job I didn’t enjoy. Hence my motto in life – “It’s time. Create a life which feels good on the inside and shows on the outside.”

What inspired you to start Centre Minds?

After many years working in the corporate industry, a major transition in my life left me feeling depressed and isolated. Through the support and guidance of counsellors, I was able to overcome the challenges I was experiencing. The positive changes I experienced gave me hope and inspired me to help others who were in a similar position. I immersed myself in studies for the next 10 years completing amongst other qualifications, undergraduate and master’s degrees in Psychology. After many years of gaining experience, I started Centre Minds to help people to be the best and most authentic version of themselves. I specialise in anxiety, depression, grief/trauma, life transitions, relationships and performance.

As the founder of Centre Minds and a seasoned mental health counsellor, how do you balance your work and personal life?

To be quite honest this can be difficult. The constant changes to appointments and client personal requirements mean that my plans may need to change at any given time. Generally, I do feel it is necessary to put the needs of my clients ahead of my own. I do however realise that I need time for myself. I generally start my day with a walk which helps to mentally prepare for the day ahead. For relaxation, I love playing golf and I set aside at least two times a month to play. When I have time, I enjoy taking my motorcycle out to explore Hong Kong.

What are your business and personal goals for 2022?

I would like to fill as many of my available time slots as possible. In this way, I can help as many clients as possible while growing as a business. Hopefully, this will help to expand into more available services. Positive results are essential, and I hope to constantly maintain my current rate of satisfied clients.

Personally, I aim to continue studying and will during this year enrol for another course to further my knowledge in the field of psychology. I definitely hope to improve my golf game. Hopefully, I can also find the time to travel abroad.

How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?

I try to maintain a balanced life of exercising, eating healthy, socialising and looking after my mental health. I believe I am in control of my own happiness so for life satisfaction I like to indulge in small pleasures such as maintaining social relationships, incorporating some challenging activities, setting and meeting goals and finding purpose.
