Self-taught baker Pallavi Sheth has a lot to be proud of. Aside from raising her family, she runs her own baking business in two cities, Mumbai and Hong Kong. She tells us about how and why she founded I Love Babycakes, her business goals for the future and what’s up-and-coming from the brand this Mother’s Day.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I am essentially a self-taught baker, with a deep-seated belief in the power of passion as a driving force in running a business. Babycakes was born out of my desire to give life to a childhood passion. I have built this business over the years while raising my two daughters, who are now almost 17 and 15. Other than baking, good food, travel and a love of dogs are what float my boat.

What inspired you to start “I Love Babycakes” and what it offers?
Running a bakery is what I always had at the back of my mind since I was nine years old. Somehow, I followed more traditional forms of education and work through college and after. It was when my daughters were four and two and a half, that I decided to take the plunge and launch Babycakes.
Motherhood set me on a pursuit of a better work-life balance and may just be the biggest reason why I launched Babycakes. What we offer are cakes and all things cake – recipes that I have developed over the years through, trial, experimentation and travel. Each of the products has a distinct homestyle flavour and feel, which is exactly what the brand promises for everything on its menu. The baking classes and the DIY baking kits, on the other hand, are an outcome of the desire to share the joy of baking among kids and adults, alike.
What is your favourite memory while running your business?
My favourite memory has to be when I started the brand out of my home kitchen in Mumbai in 2009. I would start baking at 9pm after my kids would go to bed. I had a home oven that could bake 17 cupcakes in 30 minutes and there were many times when I would set my alarm through the night to change my baking tray as the orders grew.
Are there any business or personal goals you are planning to reach this year?
My business goals for 2022 are centred around more product lines, more collaborations and a wider reach for the brand, while embracing the personal lesson that the pandemic has taught us – to take each day as it comes and to never give up on happiness.

How do you make yourself happy and ritzy in life?
Most of the things I do on a daily basis are centred around keeping happy. I like to always surround myself with things that rate high on my happiness chart. If I were to identify them distinctly, they would have to be doing what I love to do, like baking and surrounding myself with good friends, laughter, good food and quality time with my family including my two pet dogs.
Mother’s Day is just around the corner; any special products that are coming up?
We have a whole bunch of Mother’s Day specials lined up for both cities, Mumbai and Hong Kong. Other than cupcake bouquets, cakes and cookies, we also have on offer beautiful floral bouquets creatively put together with our ‘MOM” themed butter cookies in collaboration with popular florists. In addition to these, our DIY cookie decorating kits on offer promise memorable bonding times for moms and kids together in home kitchens. Outside of this, we are also offering in-person Mother’s Day special baking classes at our Wan Chai kitchen over the Mother’s Day weekend.
